I've owned Diana for 8 years. I bought her from a boat yard in Long Beach,
CA and sailed her to Marina del Rey in Los Angeles. I lived on Diana for 3
years in MDR and for 6 months in San Diego. I keep her at the Marriottt
Marina in San Diego now.
I bought the boat through a broker. The previous owners were Dan and Janet
Diehlman. At that time the boat was named "Two Dreams" Earlier names may
have been "Wanderer" and "Chariot". I had the vessel documented and named
her "Diana" after the goddess of the hunt. (I am also an archer)
When I bought Diana, I had her stripes repainted from a maroon/burgundy to
blue. I also replaced the same color sail covers with new blue ones.
Diana was lacking some of the items necessary for a liveaboard, so I
installed an Adler/Barbour cold machine, 6 gallon water heater, water pump
and accumulator with fixtures in the kitchen and in the head, and a 16
gallon waste holding tank with topside pump out. I also had a 110 volt system
installed for dock power.
Equipment on board included a Ray Jefferson color radar, VHF radio, SAT NAV
(not GPS - I don't think there are any more satalites in the sky for
SatNav), and Loran. The only electronins that I have added are a hand held VHF and
GPS. It also had a 3 burner CNG stove with oven - slow cooking.
Most of the work was done by a good friend of mine, Stan Pearson.
I rebuilt the Volvo MD3B (with Stan's help) after I bent the rods and broke
the lifters in the 2nd cylinder. I think if I had to do it over again, I
would just repalce the rods and lifters.
My latest projects included replacing the plastic ports with new Stainless
Steel ones. I also bought a new wheel. I'm finally catching up on the
varnish with the help of Michael Le Blanc.
All of my sailing has been local, with weekend trips to Catalina Island from
MDR and Ensenada from San Diego. Also plenty of day sails on San Diego bay,
chasing Grey Whales during the winter, and even watching the America's cup
race when it was in San Diego. I found a letter in the chart table from the
original owner to Volvo indicating that he had purchased the boat in kit form". While the
hull and engine were together in 1976, she wasn't launched until 1980.
He was asking for instructions in starting a four year old engine that had never been
started. Volvo also renewed the warranty from the time he first started the
engine. I had spoke to the original owner once, and he said he did all of
the woodwork inside. He may have also done the rigging. I think the
interior craftsmanship is excellent. I have the letter somewhere, and will
send more information about the original owner when I find it.
